My Musical Culture

Hi all! I grew up with music as a big part of my life. Waking up on Saturday morning, my dad would have 90s music playing on the speaker in the living room. This meant it was time to get up and do work. He always said "If the sun is up, then you should be up. C'mon, we're wasting daylight!" My mom also had a lot to do with my musical culture. She was a singer in college and still sings at church very often. She has a beautiful voice and will sing random words while she is talking. She has sung to me since I was an infant. I would like to include a clip of her singing because the beauty of her singing has always comforted me and it makes me feel at home when I listen to it.

She is singing "Holy Night" at my church before this past Christmas.

 Now more about me.

1. An example of music that is important to me: Starting my freshman year in high school, I met this guy who listened to the artist Khalid. Because I liked this guy, naturally I started listening to some of the same songs he listened to. Then on my own, I grew to love this artist. My absolute favorite album by him is, "American Teen". This album did so many things for me. It started out as a fun playlist that I would listen to on car rides, but then it turned into more. These songs bring me comfort and rest. I listen to them during difficult times, or when I do my homework. His voice and the beats are very calming. It is hard to narrow down to one specific song that is important to me, but if I had to choose it would be, "8TEEN". This song reminds me that I am still young. I have a lot to live for and I do not need to grow up yet. Here is "8TEEN" by Khalid.

2.  An example of music that has helped me get through the pandemic: My music interest varies. As I mentioned earlier, country music has always been a part of my life. During the beginning of the pandemic, I stayed at my friend's house a lot. Yes I know we were supposed to be quarantined, but she was basically family. I was at her house more than my own. We rode through the woods on the mule playing music loud on the speakers and feeling the mud splash on our legs and the wind through our hair was therapeutic. We spent most of our nights riding with her older cousin around Sumter. Which is, a nearby town where people tended to hang out at the nearest CookOut. Everyone would pull up in their trucks with lights on their rims, or under the truck and we would play country music. One song we always played was "Dinosaur" by Hank Williams Jr. We would sing our hearts out. On other nights, we would hang out at the pond. The same group of people that were in Sumter would come and hang out with us. These nights we would all sit around in chairs talking and we would have a fire going to keep us warm at night. Once again we would play this song. It had a sense of bringing us together by a simple old country song. Below is "Dinosaur" by Hank Williams Jr.

3.  An example of music I don't actually like: Honestly it is hard to say a specific type of music or song that I do not like off the top of my head. I typically like all genres of music. If I had to choose, it would probably be heavy metal. I have not ever really been a fan of this kind of music. There are some exceptions with a few songs that I have heard a friend or two play, but overall it is not my favorite. To find a particular song to add for this section was tough. Since I do not favor the music, I do not know any of the songs. Below I will add a top hit song to give an example. In order to really talk about it and explain why I do not like it, I listened to the song "Metallica" by Master Of Puppets. I did not like the lyrics at all. It has some pretty dark lyrics and I am not a big fan of that. I do however like the music without the lyrics. I can understand why someone would like this music. The tune is catchy and it is very upbeat. Here is "Metallica" by Master Of Puppets.
